  Type 

  Description 

• It is the use of medication or chemical substances to influence the person’s behaviours or movement. This does not include medication the doctor has prescribed for the treatment of: 

• or to enable treatment, of a diagnosed mental disorder, 

• Physical illness 

• Or physical condition 

• The doctor must fill in this form and explicitly indicate what the medication is for and keep this as a defensible documentation and supply it to PBS practitioners upon request. 

Environmental Restraint 

• This restricts a person’s free access to sections or all parts of their environment including the items or activities.

Mechanical Restraint 

• This is the use of a device (any mechanical material, appliance, equipment) to prevent, restrict or subdue a person’s movement for the primary purpose of influencing a person’s behaviour. This does not include the use of devices for therapeutic or non-behavioural purposes. 

Physical Restraint  

• This is the sustained or prolonged (physical force or action lasting than approximately 30 seconds that is not a reflexive manual restraint) use of action of physical force to prevent, restrict or subdue movement of a person’s body or part of their body for the primary purpose of influencing a person’s behaviour.  

• Note: this is not the use of hands-on technique in a reflexive (momentary contact to guide or redirect a person, lasting for no more than approximately 30 seconds) way to guide or redirect a person away from potential harm/injury, consistent with what could reasonably be considered the exercise of care towards a person. 

   Seclusion 

• The sole confinement of a PWD in a room or physical space at any hour of the day or night where voluntary exit is prevented, is not facilitated or Implied (the person thinks they cannot leave freely).
